Our office supports student success and academic progress through clear, accurate, timely, and student-centered academic advising and support. Guided by kindness, equity, and transparency, we respect and support each student’s unique academic journey while working to reduce barriers and create an inclusive advising experience.
We serve as stewards of academic and curricular information by maintaining accurate requirements, records, and course and program information. We partner with departments, faculty, campus partners, and other stakeholders to maintain accurate curricular information and ensure that academic requirements, courses, and programs are clearly and consistently communicated to students. Through proactive problem-solving, collaboration, and continuous improvement, we strive to make academic information accessible, advance equitable advising practices, and contribute to a welcoming and meaningful student experience within the School of Humanities.
What is academic counseling?
Academic counseling is a way for you to receive guidance on your path to graduation. Think of us as academic GPS - you decide on the destination and we will help you get there, hopefully with minimal stops and traffic! Navigating academic policies and requirements at a large public university can feel challenging and intimidating. Academic counselors are here to translate those policies into ways you can understand, and therefore allow you to make informed decisions about what academic choices and UCI resources would work best for you. We are here to explain your options, keep you on track, provide help when you are lost, and encourage you to keep going!
Student expectations
Here are some things to keep in mind as you interact with our office. We expect that our students are able to:
- Understand degree requirements and Major/Minor required coursework
- Be familiar with the academic calendar and important deadlines
- Advocate for yourself and take initiative to seek help when needed
- Be respectful of UC Irvine School of Humanities community members- this includes staff, advisors, faculty, and peers through your behavior and communications (remote/email and in-person, in preparation for classes and appointments, and generally understanding how your actions impact others)
- Understand that you play an active role in your student experience, graduation timeline, and career goals
