Welcome to UCI and the School of Humanities!

As a new transfer student, you will be required to complete mandatory academic advising this summer to enroll in courses. Academic advising sessions will be held in-person on the UC Irvine campus throughout July and August.

The sooner you complete academic advising, the sooner you will be able to enroll in classes for the fall.

HOW TO COMPLETE ACADEMIC ADVISING

1) ACTIVATE YOUR UCI NETID

2) FILL OUT AND SUBMIT THE HUMANITIES TRANSFER ADVISING SURVEY AND SUBMIT UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS FROM ALL COLLEGES YOU HAVE ATTENDED BY JULY 1

You will need to log in to the survey using your UCInetID and password. Unofficial transcripts will need to be uploaded within the survey.

NOTE: This is separate from, and in addition to, the official transcripts you are required to submit to the Office of Admissions. You are still required to send your official records to the Office of Admissions by the deadline stated on your Admissions offer.

3) WATCH THE HUMANITIES TRANSFER ADVISING WEBINAR

This webinar will be emailed to you 1-3 business days after your Humanities Transfer Advising Survey submission and all unofficial transcripts are received.

The webinar is a 40-minute interactive presentation consisting of an overview of degree requirements, academic policies, and a review of the Schedule of Classes and DegreeWorks. Please watch the entire webinar, take notes, and pay careful attention. You will be responsible for knowing all the provided information.

4) SUBMIT THE WEB ADVISING VERIFICATION FORM

This form is linked on the final slide of the Humanities Transfer Advising Webinar. You will need your UCInetID and password to login to the form.

5) SIGN UP FOR AN ACADEMIC ADVISING SESSION

After submitting the verification form, you will receive an email to your UCI email address, to which you will have access once you activate your UCInetID, within 1-3 business days. This email will invite you to sign up for an advising session.

English majors and Film & Media Studies majors are encouraged to attend the sessions dedicated entirely to their major. These sessions will feature a guest speaker from the major department.

6) ATTEND YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISING SESSION

This session will review the UCI Schedule of Classes and WebReg, the enrollment system, and consist of a one-on-one meeting with a Humanities counselor to review your degree requirements, transfer coursework applicability, and recommendations for Fall Quarter classes.

To ensure success during this session, take notes during the Transfer Advising Webinar and be prepared with any questions you may have. You can also re-watch the Humanities Transfer Advising Webinar (details in step 3) to ensure you are familiar with the terms and requirements we will be discussing. This is advisable if it has been more than two weeks since your initial viewing.

During this session, and after your one-on-one meeting with a Humanities counselor, the hold on your record will be removed, allowing you to enroll in fall courses. You will enroll in your fall quarter classes during the advising session.

Policy on Late Arrivals: You must arrive on time. Make sure to plan sufficient time for traffic, paying for parking, and finding the room.

Guest Policy: Family members or other guests may not attend the advising session. If you require special assistance and need someone to accompany you, please contact the Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study in advance to make arrangements.

Exceptions: Attendance at an advising session is mandatory. If for some reason you are unable to attend (for example, you live outside of the U.S. and will not be arriving to California until all the sessions are over), you must submit the Humanities Advising Exception Request Form to petition for an exception to complete advising online.

Exceptions require documentation and are not guaranteed to be approved. Please submit the petition as early in the summer as possible. If your petition is approved, you will still be required to complete steps 1-4 above.

In lieu of attending an in-person advising session, students approved for exceptions will be required to meet with an academic counselor via Zoom to complete mandatory advising by Friday, August 18. The hold on your record will be removed during this meeting, allowing you to enroll. More details on this mandatory meeting will be emailed to students approved for exceptions.

ENSURING SUCCESS DURING ACADEMIC ADVISING

Please be sure to complete the following steps before your academic advising session:

Re-watch the Transfer Advising Webinar: If two or more weeks have passed since you watched the Humanities Transfer Webinar, it is advised that you re-watch this webinar before your session and come prepared with any questions.

Take Any Necessary Placement Tests: As a Humanities major, you are required to complete two years of college-level language other than English (or show equivalent competence). If you completed the fourth semester of a college-level language other than English with a grade of C or better, that would satisfy the requirement. If you have Advanced Placement (AP) credit, please refer to the Advanced Placement Chart in the UCI General Catalogue to determine if you have completed the requirement. Otherwise, please review the language placement information on the Humanities Languages website or use the Humanities Language Placement Procedure tool as you may need to take a language placement exam. Check the UCI Testing Center website for information on exams to be offered over the summer.

Review Campus, School, and Major Requirements: The 2023-2024 UCI General Catalogue will be available online in early-July. The Catalogue contains valuable information about UCI, your academic field, and UCI's policies and regulations. You are responsible for knowing and adhering to the policies contained in the Catalogue.

View the New Student HandbookThis website is a great introduction to UCI and will help ensure that you complete everything required of new students.

Check Your UCI Email: You will be notified when your UCI email account is available. Be sure to check it regularly throughout the summer for important messages. If you have any questions about your account, please visit the Office of Information Technology (OIT) website.

Check the UCI Applicant PortalBe sure to check this site regularly for Admissions updates.

Academic Advising:
Am I required to complete academic advising?
Yes. Completing academic advising is mandatory for all new transfers. All students are required to do so before they can enroll in classes.

Is there a fee for academic advising?
No, academic advising is free.

What do I need to do to prepare for my advising session?
Make sure you arrive to campus early to allow time for paying for and finding parking, as well as finding the room for the academic advising session. Come prepared with any questions you have and notes from the Humanities Transfer Advising Webinar (available in June).

Do I need to take any placement exams?
As a Humanities major, you are required to complete two years of a college-level language other than English (or show equivalent competence). If you have not done that, you may need to take a language placement exam. Visit the
Academic Testing Center website for test registration dates and details.

I already sent my official transcripts to Admissions.  Do I still need to submit transcripts to Humanities?
Yes. You are required to send official transcripts to Admissions and submit unofficial transcripts to the Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study within the Humanities Transfer Advising Survey.

What is the difference between TSPOP and academic advising?
TSPOP is a mandatory orientation designed to help new transfer students make a smooth transition to life at UCI with information about UCI resources; the program is run by the New Student Orientation Office and does not include academic advising. Academic advising consists of a webinar and a mandatory advising session with a counselor that includes an overview of degree requirements and academic policies, and recommendations for Fall Quarter courses.

I signed up for/attended TSPOP already, do I need to do anything else?
Yes. In addition to signing up for and attending TSPOP, you must also complete mandatory academic advising with the School of Humanities in order to enroll in courses for the fall. Instructions for completing this advising will be emailed to you and posted to the
Advising for New Transfers page in early June and advising sessions will take place throughout July and August.

I cannot attend an in-person advising session this summer.  How do I enroll in classes?
Attendance at an advising session is mandatory. If for some reason you are unable to attend (for example, you live outside of the U.S. and will not be arriving to California until all the sessions are over), you must submit the
Humanities Advising Exception Request Form to petition for an exception to complete advising online.

Exceptions require documentation and are not guaranteed to be approved. Please submit the petition as early in the summer as possible. If your petition is approved, you will still be required to complete steps 1-4 above.

In lieu of attending an in-person advising session, students approved for exceptions will be required to meet with an academic counselor via Zoom to complete mandatory advising by August 18. The hold on your record will be removed during this meeting, allowing you to enroll. More details on this mandatory meeting will be emailed to students approved for exceptions.

Enrolling in Classes:
When can I enroll in classes?
You can begin enrolling in classes during your advising session. The sooner you complete your advising, the sooner you will be able to enroll in classes.

What classes should I enroll in?
We will discuss your degree requirements and a recommended fall schedule during the academic advising session, based on the coursework you have previously completed.

Why is there a hold on my record?
All new transfer students begin their career at UCI with a hold. Once you complete academic advising this summer, the hold will be removed, allowing you to enroll in classes.
The Admissions Office may also place a hold on your record if you do not submit your transcripts and/or test scores by the deadlines posted. Please check your
UCI Applicant Portal page or contact the Office of Admissions if this is the case.

Changing Majors:
I was not admitted as a Humanities major, but I want to change my major into Humanities. How do I do that?
On the Transfer Advising Survey, be sure to note the major you would like to change to. We will approve your change of major request when you attend your academic advising session. You can find a list of all Humanities majors on the
Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study website.

I was admitted as a Humanities major, but I want to change my major to a different Humanities major. How do I do that?
In the Transfer Advising Survey, be sure to note the major you would like to change to. You can find a list of all Humanities majors on the
Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study website.

I was admitted as a Humanities major, but I want to change my major to a non-Humanities major. How do I do that?
You must contact the
School that offers the major you are interested in changing to. They will let you know if you are eligible to change your major. If you are not eligible to change, you must either keep your current Humanities major or change to a different Humanities major. You will then still be required to complete Humanities academic advising, adhere to all Humanities policies, and take classes for your current Humanities major even if you are still hoping to eventually change majors.

Other:
Can I attend summer school at UCI?
Yes. Please see the
Summer Session website for additional information. If you would like to discuss enrolling in Summer Session II, be sure to sign up for a July advising session.

What is the status of my admission?
Please check your
UCI Applicant Portal page or contact the Office of Admissions with any questions about your admissions status.

I have a question that was not answered here. Who can I contact for assistance?
Please email Malinda Pang at
pangmr@uci.edu with any questions not answered on this page.
