On April 16, Visual Studies PhD student Gabriela Urtiaga was honored as the School of Humanities awardee at the 2026 UCI Latine Excellence and Achievement Awards. Awardees were recognized for their outstanding achievements, both intellectual and for the Latinx communities to which they contribute.
Urtiaga is an art historian and art curator who specializes in modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino Art. She joined the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in Long Beach, California, as chief curator in September 2019 and entered the VS PhD program in Fall or 2025.
