To start off the new school year, the Classics Department participated in UCI’s annual Anteater Involvement Fair. The department has made a tradition of appearing at the fair, using it as an opportunity to showcase its course offerings, faculty, and the career paths available to majors and minors. Alongside these highlights, the department decided to celebrate one of its most popular courses—classical mythology—and create a tote bag to give away to students. The bag featured the iconic Peter the Anteater logo and the phrase “I love myth!” Students who visited the Classics booth and wanted a bag were asked to answer Greek and Roman mythology trivia, ranging from common questions about the Olympians to more obscure details about minor deities and demigods. In all, students were delighted to show off the knowledge they acquired from Percy Jackson and other sources, and throughout the day, groups gathered to see how many different questions they could answer. When the fair ended, over 100 tote bags were given out—a clear sign of the pervasiveness of classical myth and the continued interest in Classics!
