Congrats to Karen Amavizca '26 who has won the 2024 UCI New Approach (non-animal) Methodologies in Research Summer grant, offered through the Religious Studies program.

Karen will complete an “Evidence-based Toxicology” self-paced course through Johns Hopkins University's Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), complete a series of research readings on animals in research from perspectives of regulatory and clinical research, affect studies, religious studies, and ethics, and attend 1-2 NAMs Workshops. 

Karen is a major in Philosophy with a Specialization in Law & Society and minor in Spanish.

The UCI New Approach (Non-Animal) Methodologies in Research Grant Program is offered through the Shri Parshvanath Presidential Chair in Jain Studies in recognition of the tradition’s ancient commitment to nonviolence toward plants, animals, and elemental life, as well as the global Jain community’s long-standing leadership in medicine.
