Duncan Pritchard Discusses AI and Higher Education in IAU Horizons
Duncan Pritchard, Co-Director of the Center for Civic Flourishing and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at UC Irvine, has contributed an invited article, “Navigating the AI Revolution,” to the latest issue of IAU Horizons, published by the International Association of Universities. The issue focuses on “The Value of Universities in the Era of AI.”
The article argues that artificial intelligence presents a distinctive educational challenge because it allows students to outsource the cognitive activities through which intellectual character develops. Pritchard distinguishes between task-specific cognitive skills and the more stable intellectual character traits that enable students to become independent thinkers and learners. He argues that educators should preserve opportunities for students to undertake intellectual work without AI assistance, while cultivating the judgment needed to use AI in ways that enhance their intellectual character.
The article is available on page 26 of the magazine.
