Curriculum
The promise of higher education depends upon upholding an intellectual culture that cultivates the scholarly virtues associated with truth-directed inquiry. This is especially important in a democratic society, where such a culture can promote not only the individual flourishing of students but also social flourishing by creating the intellectual space in which the civic virtues can thrive. A curriculum focused on the foundations and practices of civic life can help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to this shared civic life.
Building a Civics Curriculum
The Center will draw together existing and new courses to create a curriculum that comprehensively introduces UC Irvine students to scholarship on the foundations and practices of civic life, with a particular focus on the US context. As this curriculum develops, the Center will explore ways of promoting and expanding it, including the possibility of introducing a new civics minor. Stay tuned!
Anteater Virtues Educational Resources
The Anteater Virtues Project has developed a suite of educational materials focused on curiosity, intellectual humility, intellectual tenacity, integrity, and the cultivation of virtuous intellectual character more broadly. These include foundational and advanced materials designed for use by students and instructors across disciplines.
Of particular relevance to the Center's focus on civic flourishing is the project's new module on Scholarly Values and Intellectual Virtues. This module explores the values that underpin scholarly inquiry, including the role the intellectual virtues play in sustaining an intellectual environment in which differing perspectives can be respectfully evaluated.
UC Irvine students, faculty, and staff can access the Anteater Virtues educational materials by self-enrolling in the Canvas course. A public syllabus provides an overview of the curriculum. Those outside UC Irvine who are interested in accessing the full materials are welcome to contact Thomas Colclough at the Center.
