CALL FOR PROPOSALS: $5K Summer 2020 Fellowships in Japanese Studies

With generous funding from a Japan Foundation Institutional Support Grant, the Department of East Asian Studies will award two $5000 grants for summer research or language study in 2020.

Application Deadline: March 20, 2020 by midnight to Stephanie Wijetilleke (sisnali@uci.edu)

Eligibility: Any UCI Ph.D. student using significant Japanese language materials for research

Award Decision: March 27, 2020

Award Disbursement: May 1, 2020

Application Materials (submit as much as you can)

1. Current cv

2. For post-Quals Students: Dissertation prospectus or abstract. Include dissertation title, chapter titles, and one paragraph per chapter with main argument and key primary texts

3. For pre-Quals Students: Set of Exam list titles / head-notes / examiners and schedule for taking quals

4. 500-word research proposal: Explain how summer funding will help you make progress toward either quals or dissertation completion. If not obvious, explain how you are using “significant Japanese language materials” for your research.

5. Dissemination: If applying to do research, list conferences at which you might present it, and/or list of grant proposals to which it will contribute. If applying for summer language study, explain where you will take classes, whether you have been accepted to the program, etc.

6. Budget: Explain how and when you will spend the money (travel, lodging, language school fees, etc.). If you are staying in Irvine, outline living expenses.
