Rean Du has been selected as a 2025-26 Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) Fellow for her project exploring sound symbolism through Pokémon names. She is being advised by Professor Marco Aurelio Silva Fonseca and her research examines how certain speech sounds are intuitively associated with meaning, such as strength and size. She investigates whether learners of Japanese pick up on these sound-meaning patterns in the same way native Japanese speakers do, offering new insight into how sound symbolism may shape second-language comprehension.
