Do I have to be currently enrolled in Vietnamese courses at UCI?

No, you do not need to be currently enrolled or ever enrolled. This program is a supplement to classroom instruction, but is also open to native speakers or students who want to retain their skills. The content does not correlate with class material, it is not tutoring or homework help sessions. This is also open to both graduate and undergraduate students.

What is the difference between a mentor and a mentee?

Mentors are advanced speakers and who have strong written and reading skills. Mentees are students who are new to the language entirely or are in the process of learning the language.

How do I apply?

Visit this link, and complete the online forms listed on the left under “Mentor” or “Mentee.” You will be contacted via email with enrollment info early in spring quarter. The deadline is Wednesday, April 8th at 5:00pm.

Can I enroll more than once?

Yes, up to 4 times per language.

How many units is this course and how long do we meet for?

The course is a one unit Pass/No Pass course. Students meet for one hour each week from weeks 3 to 10 (no meeting during finals week).

How do we enroll via WebReg?

Students will be paired (or grouped) and emailed once they have been authorized on their student records. Then, students will enroll normally on WebReg as they do with other courses. The authorization is valid for one quarter, and will be sent by Friday of week 2.

How are we grouped together and how do we communicate to plan meetings?

Pairs and groups are created based on the number of applicants and language fluency. Students often create a group chat/message to plan meetings, but using email is fine too. Students have full agency.

How are we graded?

Students are graded based on weekly submissions of a reflection and summary of their week’s meeting. Each submission is due on Sunday by 11:59pm from weeks 3 to 10. HLLP’s coordinator will be examining these weekly.

Why should I participate?

This course is a casual way of improving language skills (especially verbal skills) and introduces students to cultures of the language. It is a unique student-led course which enhances language abilities and fosters multicultural competency.
