Silent Friend (Stille Freundin) Film Screening

To kick off our Humanities Core lecture unit on Critical Plant Studies with Professor Jon Pitt (East Asian Studies), please join us for a screening the 2025 film Silent Friend (Stille Freundin) on Tuesday, November 10 from 7:00-9:30 p.m. in the McCormick Screening Room (HG 1070).

Directed by Ildikó Enyedi and starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Léa Sedoux, Silent Friend traces over a century in the life of ginkgo tree on the campus of Marburg University by telling the stories of three very different people who study and interact with the tree. As Beatrice Loayza wrote, “It’s a film of sprawling ideas that float around like pollen, with some particles creating marvelous blooms.” Like Professor Pitt’s lectures, the film explores how plant life can trouble our preconceptions about agency, consciousness, and what it means to be human. Winner of multiple awards on the festival circuit, Silent Friend was the Hungarian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.

The film is in German, English, and Cantonese, and will be shown with English subtitles.
