Carl Sohmer “Intellectually Virtuous Integrity”

This essay examines integrity as an intellectual virtue through responsibilist virtue epistemology, integrating various perspectives into a comprehensive framework. It analyzes Susan Haack's view of intellectual integrity as truth-driven motivation and Greg Scherkoske's definition as responsible belief maintenance and revision. The author critiques these views and utilizes Jason Baehr's four-dimensional framework to offer a novel perspective on intellectually virtuous integrity (IVI) encompassing motivation, competence, emotional factors, and judgment. This highlights the importance of maintaining epistemically responsible beliefs in daily life. The essay concludes by discussing IVI's nature and application in various contexts.
