One of the clearest arenas in which we can see the interplay between science, society, and values is in medical practice. The philosophical subfield of values in science investigates the relationship between social and personal values and scientific practice. A subset of this literature attempts to construct criteria for when value influence in science is acceptable and when it is not acceptable. This literature almost exclusively focuses on the decisions of individual scientists. However, I argue that it is important to consider the social dimensions of value influence in science.
