Position Summary

As a member of the Visitor Experience Department, Gallery Guides report to the Visitor Experience Program Manager. Gallery Guides work on-site at Langson IMCA’s interim museum space at 18881 Von Karman Avenue and ensure the safety of the artwork on display while helping visitors have a meaningful and enjoyable museum experience.

This is a public-facing position, and Gallery Guides regularly and actively engage with visitors, providing insight and enhancing the public’s experience. Guides are expected to welcome visitors to the interim museum, answer questions its exhibitions and programs, engage visitors in casual and educational conversations, and educate guests on gallery policies. Gallery Guides play a vital role in shaping the visitor experience by observing guest interactions and sharing key insights with Visitor Experience supervisors. Their valuable observations on visitor behavior, trends, and frequently asked questions help enhance museum operations and engagement strategies.

Guides will receive training on all relevant subjects; a background in art or art history is not required. Experience with customer service (e.g. service jobs in food, retail, etc.) is preferred but not required.

Gallery Guides are scheduled on a quarterly basis and are expected to work at least one five-hour gallery shift per week. Shifts are organized in morning (9 am – 2 pm), afternoon (12 pm – 5 pm), and all-day (9 am – 5 pm, + 30-minute unpaid lunch) turns. Shift start- and end-times are flexible to accommodate class schedules.

Applicants can choose to start Summer 2025 (June 17 – August 30) or Fall 2025 (September 18).

Langson IMCA’s 2,500 square foot interim museum operates on the main level of the Airport Tower building at Von Karman Avenue in Irvine. The museum organizes three exhibitions per year and include works from the museum's permanent collection and on loan from private lenders and institutions; Gallery Guides work limited hours during the three-week period in between exhibitions.

Museum Immersion Program

About the Program

Langson IMCA offers a 12-week internship during the summer to UCI undergraduates which provides a hands-on experience in museum operations, working alongside professionals in departments such as Collections, Curatorial, Marketing, and Education.

This immersive experience is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the museum world while tailoring projects to individual interests and academic goals. Students will also participate in weekly lunches with staff, embark on behind-the-scenes field trips to renowned museums, and receive valuable career-readiness training.

The program requires 32 hours a week starting June 24 through September 12. The position requires working in the office Tuesday through Thursday and working remotely on Friday.

Description of Departments

  • Collections - creates and maintains the official records for all artworks in the museum’s permanent collection, oversees all artworks entering and leaving the museum, and is responsible for the care of the collection.
  • Curatorial - responsible for researching and curating exhibitions, organizing related public programming, and researching and building the permanent collection. Through these programs, the aim is to deepen student, faculty and community connections with and around California art.
  • Education - a public-facing team that develops and delivers engaging public programs, leads school museum visits, and fosters community connections by participating in various community engagement events. These efforts create meaningful learning experiences, connect diverse audiences and deepen public engagement with California art.
  • Marketing - develops and executes comprehensive strategies to engage the UCI community and broader audience, promoting the museum's programs and exhibitions through various channels including social media, events, and content creation.

UCI Graduate Student Researcher

Department: Curatorial

Position Summary:
The Curatorial Department at UCI Langson Institute and Museum for California Art (Langson IMCA) is accepting applications for a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR). The GSR will participate in activities including, but not limited to, the responsibilities listed below:

  • Conducts research on objects and artists in Langson IMCA’s collection for curatorial projects, conservation initiatives, or public programs.
  • Supports all aspects of exhibition research, development, and implementation through interdisciplinary engagement with various academic fields of study (e.g., arts, humanities, sciences, education) and outreach to cultural institutions, such as archives, libraries, artist estates, galleries, historical societies, etc.
  • Assists with writing and editing exhibition-related materials, including interpretive wall texts and other exhibition-related didactic resources
  • Contributes to the development and organization of the museum’s archives and rare books collection on California art and history
  • Identifies and researches artists of relevance to the museum’s mission and collection
  • Provides organizational support and handles sensitive and highly confidential information

 GSRs are to participate actively in the conduct of research, as described below:

  • Research and collect data through complex techniques and procedures, library research, structured interviews, or other project specific methodology.
  • Collect, interpret, synthesize, and analyze data/information.
  • Schedule, organize, and report on status of research activities.
  • Plan and modify research techniques, procedures, tests, equipment, or software management.
  • Prepare materials for Human Subjects Committee review.
  • Prepare interview questions.
  • Recruit and/or interview subjects.
  • Summarize interviews.
  • Maintain accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary.
  • Summarize project/research results.

Position Summary:
The Curatorial Department of UCI Langson Institute and Museum for California Art (Langson IMCA) invites UCI undergraduate students to apply to its full-time worker positions for the summer of 2024 (July - August). Langson IMCA operates in a hybrid mode (on-site Tuesday through Thursday and remote Mondays and Fridays) from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Langson IMCA’s Curatorial Department develops exhibitions, publications, public programs, and academic engagement initiatives, among other projects. The department also oversees the development of Langson IMCA’s archives and conducts research on artworks in the permanent collection. Student workers will have the opportunity to learn about day-to-day curatorial responsibilities and museum best practices while working closely with Langson IMCA’s curatorial staff and staff from other departments, including Collections, Exhibitions, Visitor Experience, and Education.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to,

  • exhibition development,
  • conducting basic, entry-level research tasks with oversight by curatorial staff
  • supporting collection research projects led and conducted by curatorial staff
  • cataloging
  • archive maintenance,
  • and drafting of interpretive materials for internal and external use.

Additionally, the position includes opportunities to visit art storage & other local museums with staff, write a post for social media, and participate in art related and professional development workshops.

The ideal candidate is motivated, detail oriented, meticulous in gathering and entering information, and comfortable with computer work. The start date will be the week of June 25 and requires a minimum of 32 hours a week during the Summer. The position requires working in the office Tuesday through Thursday and working remotely on Friday.

Preferred requirements: The ideal candidate is inquisitive, detail-oriented, organized, and a strong writer.

This paid position is open to any UCI undergraduate students pursuing an Art History major or an Art History minor. Exceptional applicants from other School of Humanities majors or the School of the Arts will also be considered.

Position Summary:
As a member of the Education and Community Engagement Department, the part-time UCI Student Museum Art Educator reports to the Associate Director of Education and Community Engagement. They collaborate with a team of museum educators and teaching artists to help build relationships with partner K-12 schools and UCI. They help Langson IMCA build knowledge on California Art, art education, STEAM, 21st-century learning and pedagogy through collaboration and programs.

The Student Museum Art Educator also assists in developing and implementing the Saturday Open House event for partner classroom teachers to introduce Langson IMCA's K-12 programs and the Teacher Resource Guides derived from the exhibitions on display which serve as the museum's K-12 art curriculum.

This opportunity is open to registered UCI undergraduate and graduate students only.

Paid summer internships at museums and visual arts organizations in LA for college students from backgrounds underrepresented in the arts. Interns must be permanent residents of LA County. Candidates from all backgrounds may apply, but the internship program is intended for students from groups underrepresented in careers related to art conservation, museums, and/or visual arts organizations. 

Summer positions are available each year at Getty (the Getty Center in Brentwood and Getty Villa in Malibu) and at over 50 LA-area museums and visual arts organizations.

The internships are full-time (40 hours/week) for a consecutive 10-week work period between the months of June and August and receive a stipend of $6,925. There are two mandatory educational components of the internship: an Arts Summit and two Learning Community events.

Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center is located in Anaheim and showcases a plethora of interesting and unique exhibits in art, history, contemporary culture, and science. They also host concerts, workshops, walking tours, poetry readings, and family events. 

Here are the two types of internships you can apply for (job descriptions are linked at the bottom):

Regular Muzeo Internship Program (not paid, but you can apply for an undergraduate SFIAH internship stipend):

  • Customized to YOUR interests. If for instance, you are a graphic designer, you can do mainly graphic design for Muzeo.
  • Every intern is trained in a variety of different tasks including guest services, events, installation, etc.
  • The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday, so you would work with them on when to schedule your 60 internship hours in that time frame.

Internships Through the City of Anaheim (paid opportunity):

  • The City of Anaheim has established a grant to fund internships at Muzeo!
  • Internship Details:
    • Work Wednesday-Sunday 10:30am-5:30pm (maximum of 30 hours per week)
    • 6 month-long internship
    • Pay: $16-18 per hour
  • Requirements:
    • Must reside in Anaheim (they are somewhat flexible with residence requirement, so you can still apply if you live in Orange County)
    • Must be currently unemployed
    • Must be 16-30 years old
  • Notes:
    • They have all types of positions and are currently looking for graphic design interns and social media & marketing interns to start this summer in June.
    • They have an “Curatorial Assistant” intern position, which is 12 months long and is great for hands-on exhibition experience.
