Call for Virtual Internship at Rockland Center for the Arts (RoCA) Winter/Spring 2021 This internship at RoCA will involve working closely with the Exhibition Director and Executive Director to research artist Charles White and his contemporaries. Other artists to research may include: Alonzo Adams, Mequitta Ahuja, Elizabeth Catlett, Leonard Freed, David Hammons, Dr. Edmund Gordon, Kerry James Marshall, Gordon Parks, and Henry Tanner. The research materials will be utilized for "Charles White: Influences", an exhibition in collaboration with the Gordon Center for Black Art and Culture, which will be presented both virtually and on-site at the Rockland Center for the Arts.

"Charles White: Influences" will be the artistic and historical documentation of unsung heroes and the soul beauty of a people. It will trace the trajectory of White’s most influential relationships: both those acolytes his work influenced through generations and those progenitors who influenced and informed his work.

An exhibit of his works, of his influencers, and those influenced, will be a testament to Charles White’s lasting significance as an artist, activist, and educator. Charles White created representational art of social concern, with profound feeling and resonant of human dignity. His masterpiece artworks embodied his commitment to social and economic justice, human rights, and empowering black society. He was determined to defend the achievements of his people against the misinformation and parade of grotesque stereotypes that proliferated throughout society in books, films, advertisements. In 1940, Charles White told an interviewer: “I am interested in the social, even the propaganda, angle of painting. . . . I am interested in creating a style of painting that is much more powerful, that will take in the technical end and at the same time say what I have to say. Paint is the only weapon I have with which to fight what I resent.” To this end, he took ordinary people and showed through his artwork how they were extraordinary, using a visual language of supple power and gestural eloquence, dignifying lives in his heroic—almost mythic—representations.

Rockland Center for the Arts (RoCA) is a comprehensive multi-arts center located in West Nyack, New York. RoCA is dedicated to creating and understanding art through its School for the Arts, exhibitions, workshops, literary and performing events, Summer Arts Day Camp, and outreach programs. Originally known as the Rockland Foundation, RoCA was founded in 1947 by a group of community leaders and renowned artists, including Aaron Copland, Paulette Goddard, Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya, Maxwell Anderson, and Helen Hayes. Their intention was to draw on the abundant artistic talent in their community by offering instruction, exhibitions, lectures, plays, and concerts “of a caliber seldom available outside of New York City.”

The mission of Rockland Center for the Arts is to inspire, educate and enrich the community through creating, teaching and presenting the arts, and to provide opportunities for all people to experience and participate in the cultural life of our region. By providing a range of relevant, thought-provoking programs, RoCA engages the individual and the community through quality art experiences. Exhibitions at RoCA are key reference points for community outreach and an arts-in education program that serves over 1,500 children annually in underserved school districts, with most offered free of charge through grants. This includes art programs for children who have little to no arts programming in their schools. We are committed to bringing art experiences to the entire community including: exhibition tours and hands-on workshops, enrichment classes for underserved children in school, senior citizens, and special populations through our outreach and in-house programs.

SFMOMA’s full-time, ten-week paid summer internship program for undergraduate and graduate students introduces participants to the full spectrum of possible museum careers as well as builds foundational leadership skills. Interns receive an insider view of museum administration, including mentor training, hands-on project experience, and professional development opportunities.

The Summer 2021 internship program will be a remote program due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current shelter-in-place orders for the city of San Francisco. We may shift to a hybrid program if we can safely be on-site this summer.

Internships begin Monday, June 7, 2021 and end Friday, August 13, 2021.

Mellon Summer Academy and Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program

Program Overview
The Andrew W. Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program provides specialized training in the curatorial field to students across the United States from historically underrepresented groups in the curatorial field who support the goal of promoting inclusive, pluralistic museums. The fellowship seeks to make a critical impact on American art museums by developing gifted curators who are committed to engaging the full spectrum of museum audiences. The Program occurs at six partnering institutions: the Art Institute of Chicago; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This initiative is generously supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

How To Apply

The program is organized around two components: the Mellon Summer Academy, and the Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship. Students must first apply to a Summer Academy. Summer Academies are one-week immersion programs designed to provide a rich experience in the museum environment and expose participants to career options related to art and art history. Each Summer Academy includes workshops, tours, field trips and networking events with museum professionals. Fifteen students will be selected to participate the Summer Academy offered in 2020. Upon the completion of each Summer Academy, students submit supplemental information for fellowship consideration. Two participants will be awarded multi-year fellowships at the museum.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups in the curatorial field who support the goal of promoting inclusive, pluralistic museums are encouraged to apply. Students must be currently enrolled at a university, college or community college, and, if selected, able to commit to two years in the program prior to graduating. Applicants should express an interest in art, art history, or the museum field. In addition to having a strong academic record, a candidate should be able to demonstrate, through areas of study, extracurricular activities, or other experiences, how they will contribute to the program.

About Aquila Projects @ WorkWell: WorkWell opened its doors in Irvine in July of 2018. Their idea was simple: to create discursive spaces for growing businesses to find a community in an open-concept office setting. Just like WorkWell modernizes the office, Aquila Projects @ WorkWell, creates a new environment for emerging artists who resonate with our idea for discovery and community.

The City of Irvine thrives on creativity in visualizing possibilities for the future. The gallery aims to foster a community of contemporary artists to allow a variety of ideas to surface, and collaborative initiatives to follow. Art constantly changes its definitions to include new ideas and new technologies to reshape the way people think about the world. Aquila Projects @ WorkWell works with artists who not only push boundaries in the studio, but also alter perceptions in life: curators, musicians, teachers, writers, dancers. These people use space and art as a means for resistance and change and we offer an open invitation for you to join in the fun.
