Florence Seminar with Professor Massey in Winter 2024Students in Professor Massey's Winter Quarter seminar spent a week in Florence, Italy in March 2024 exploring the urban fabric of this magnificent Renaissance city. Visiting multiple monuments, museums and archives such as San Marco, the Bargello, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Medici Archive Project, the students also were assigned to present research to each other on various works of art and sites. The group soaked up the local culture, food and gelato, and enjoyed a cooking lesson where they learned to make ravioli, tagliatelle, and gnocchi.
“Return to Earth,” student workshop at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, with Professor Winther-Tamaki, Fall 2023Students researched works of art on exhibit at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and presented their findings at a public workshop at the museum attended by students, professors, and curators based in Tokyo. After the workshop, the group spent six days visiting exhibitions, museums, and other sites in the Tokyo area.
"Simulacral Spaces" Field Trip to Las Vegas with Professor Betancourt in Spring 2022Students spent a week combing through the art and architecture of the Las Vegas Strip. Visiting hotels such as the Luxor and Mandalay Bay, they asked questions about the simulation of luxury, discussed city history at the Mob Museum and Neon Museum, and rounded off the trip with “O” at the Bellagio, where they had a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the technological wonders that make the spectacle happen.
“Site Specificity” Field Trip to Seattle with Professor Nisbet in Winter 2022Students visited the Pacific Northwest to examine location and site-based practices in contemporary art. They visited works located on reclaimed mining and industrially polluted lands, and artworks permanently installed at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. On an excursion to Bellingham, the class also took a walking tour of the acclaimed sculpture collection at Western Washington University.
"LA Architecture" Field Trip to Los Angeles with Professor Massey in Fall 2022Students in Art History 145C: LA Architecture went on two immersive field trips to Los Angeles, staying overnight in a mid-century modern motel in Pasadena along old Route 66. They visited landmark architectural monuments, such as Watts Towers, and important urban sites, learning about the historical growth and glamor of the City of Angels.
