Ethics Bowl

The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl is a competition in which teams of undergraduate students explore contemporary ethical problems and dilemmas. The cases debated are designed and written by members of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics and cover a wide range of controversial ethical issues.

The competition has a unique design that differs from the pro/con, black/white format typical of ordinary debates. It is intended to give the students an opportunity to use reason and critical thinking to propose and discuss with their peers alternative approaches to difficult ethical problems.

The Department of Philosophy at UCI will be participating in the Ethics Bowl for the first time during the 2017-2018 academic year.  Second year graduate students Itzel Garcia and Steven Norris are volunteering as coaches and will chaperone UCI’s team of undergraduates to this year’s regional competition in San Diego.  Team meetings are held weekly throughout the fall quarter.

If you’d like more information and/or to join our team, please contact either coach at (Itzel Garcia) itzelag@uci.edu or (Steven Norris) scnorris@uci.edu.
