Every summer, the Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) hosts a three-week Publishing Workshop: an immersive, collaborative program designed for people interested in editing, publishing, and writing. The goal of the workshop is “to revolutionize the publishing industry from the ground up by increasing access, facilitating change, and inspiring invention through the recruitment, training, and mentorship of early-career talent from diverse backgrounds."

Over the three-week program—held on the campus of Emerson College (Los Angeles) from Sunday, July 5 – Friday, July 24, 2020. Fellows will work with industry professionals to learn the foundations of book, magazine, and online editing and production; digital and print publishing; and the financial aspects of the publishing industry. The workshop involves hands-on training, opportunities for networking, and a chance to meet professionals from across the industry. This is a great opportunity for graduate students with interests in pursuing a career in or those who just want to gain more experience in academic, trade, literary and/or creative editing and publishing. You can find more information here: https://thepublishingworkshop.com/.

The Humanities Commons is offering two scholarships to current PhD and MFA students to attend the 2020 Publishing Workshop. The scholarship will pay for tuition and provide a $1,000 stipend. SOH graduate students must apply directly to and be accepted by the LARB Publishing Workshop. The scholarship deadline to apply for the Publishing Workshop has been extended to March 30. When you apply, please make sure to note that you are a UCI humanities graduate student.

Scholarship recipients will be selected from UCI Humanities graduate students who are accepted by LARB for the 2020 Publishing Workshop. LARB also has other scholarship funds available and we hope with their help to be able to support as many UCI humanities graduate students as possible.

LARB is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and publishing rigorous and engaging writing on literature, culture, and the arts which includes an online magazine, print quarterly, and book series.
