CULTURE AND URBAN FUTURES IN AFRICA

MARCH 21-22, 2022 | 10AM-6PM | HG 1030

MARCH 21, 6PM - SCREENING - PETA NDALIKO , KAPITA

Join UCI's School of Humanities, Department of History, Program in Global Middle East Studies, Department of Global and International Studies, Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation, Office of Inclusive Excellence, and University of California Presidential Chair -- for a two-day workshop exploring the role of culture in struggles over rights, housing, environmental justice, and human security in Nigeria and the Congo, with the founders of two of the most innovative and celebrated grassroots organizations on the Continent - CMAP/Chicoco Media in Port Harcourt and Yole!Africa in Goma.

During the workshop we will discuss how grassroots cultural organizations are playing a pivotal role helping local communities negotiate the challenges of war, poverty, climate change, development, and large-scale influx of migrants and refugees, all through the use of various forms of cultural production, from music and film to social mapping, community radio, sustainable building and farming, and the creation of international networks of solidarity and the sharing of hard-won experience. This is a unique opportunity for the UCI community to learn about some of the most innovative urban and rural grassroots initiative in Africa and share our own experiences toward building new collaborative projects here and with partners in Nigeria, Congo and across the Continent.

Featuring: Celebrated Congolese filmmaker and Yole!Africa co-founder Petna Ndaliko; Oscar-nominated CMAP founder and current Harvard Loeb Fellow Michael Uwemedimo; Veteran BBC World radio producer and CMAP co-founder Ana Bonaldo.

Organizers: Mark LeVine (UCI Department of History and Program in Global Middle East Studies), Richard Matthew (UCI Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy).
