In "All's Well That Ends Well," Helena, a doctor's daughter, chooses Bertram, the young Count she grew up with, as her prize for curing the King of France. Bertram, though, is not that into her. Why does she love him, and can we learn to love him, too?
In this online lecture, come explore Bertram's struggle to make his voice heard in a world in which nobility comes with its own constraints. New Swan Summer Fellow Katie Schubert will take you through her own journey with the play, using New Swan production photos and Shakespeare's historical context to shed new light on Bertram's youthful experiments. Adam Koda, who plays Bertram in New Swan's staging of "All's Well," will read from the play and share his insights into the character.
Katie Schubert is a Ph.D. candidate in English with an emphasis in Gender and Sexuality Studies. She is completing her dissertation on politics and the gendered body through the metaphor of the mirror in medieval and early modern literature, including Shakespeare. She is a frequent contributor to the New Swan community. Adam Koda is an LA-based actor who has joined New Swan for his second season.
