What do Bilibili and Douyin/Tik Tok tell us about social and economic changes in China? Why has science fiction become so popular in China today? How are online talk shows reflecting and shaping discussions in Chinese society? More broadly, how do we understand the rapid social changes in China through the lens of media? This course examines the vibrant and shifting Chinese media cultures from the late 1980s to the present. Every week we will look into a different form of media, ranging from documentary, fictional cinema, science fiction to digital media and bullet-comment video cultures. We will pay attention to how these media cultures intervene in social discussions such as gender and the overwork culture. As cultural symbols like Monkey King and League of Legends are reaching Chinese youth across anime, cinema, television, music, game, literature and social media, we will also consider how media forms intersect with each other and co-produce community and memory in the digital age. This course, conducted in Chinese, is designed for students with native or near-native fluency in Chinese. We will read, watch and discuss the course texts in Chinese.
