This course offers an inquiry into the rich Chinese tradition of literary narrative on love/passion so as to guide students to develop a deeper understanding of the above questions/intellectual debates. By probing the cultural, religious, gender, and sociological significance of various Chinese love stories, this course sketches a historiographical contour of Chinese people’s romantic emotion as it is continuously experienced, expressed, and imagined in literary and artistic productions.
