Access Asia Graduate Research Panel
Researching Asia: A Discussion on Methodologies and Positionalities

Friday, 3/17/23 at 1 - 2:30 pm
Location: UCI HG 1010

Facilitators: UCI Center for Asian Studies Graduate Student Fellows

The Access Asia series at UCI Center for Asian Studies is happy to invite you to a conversation on conducting research in Asia, with a perspective on positionality as a researcher native or non-native to Asia. We reflect on the range and degree of connection and familiarity with Asia as a place with its distinct geo-political history. We will discuss the ‘insider-outsider dynamic that doing research ‘in’ and ‘from’ Asia entails. Pivoting on critical methodologies such as archival and ethnographic methods, participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literary and cultural studies among others, this conversation will bring together three speakers at various stages of their scholarly career to speak to the complexities and nuances of doing research on the Asias.

Dr. Carrie Perkins, Toni Hays, and sridipta ghatak will reflect on their own research with a broad focus on what got them into researching Asia, the logistics and the scholarly specificities that guide their work.

We would be delighted to have you join this discussion. Light refreshments and coffee will be served.

Best wishes,
Christine, Gunn and sridipta.
