The Mongol rulers of China’s Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) enshrined wovenimages of their deceased ancestors in the imperial portrait halls. The wovenmedium of these images was a dramatic departure from the establishedtraditions of imperial portraiture in East Asia, where such images werepreviously painted or sculpted. What accounted for this transition? Thislecture considers this question from the perspective of the Mongol rulinghouse at the center of a world empire.
