Dissertation Proposal: Light Up the Halo!: Mexican Engagement with Orange County’s Baseball Culture in the Post-World War II Era
This dissertation will focus on exploring the relationship between ethnic Mexicans and the Los Angeles Angels baseball team in southern California during the second half of the twentieth century. Specifically, it will analyze how the northern Orange County ethnic Mexican residents and baseball enthusiasts perceived and interacted with the actions and influences of the Los Angeles Angels Baseball organization. This dissertation aims to illustrate how ethnic Mexicans' involvement in baseball culture challenged their social citizenship in southern California's conservative enclaves. Additionally, this analysis of Orange County baseball culture will delve into broader themes of immigration, segregation, resistance, and assimilation within ethnic Mexican communities. This work will address questions such as how the Angels organization has portrayed an image that upholds traditional standards of race, gender, and class in Orange County, and how this image has contributed to excluding ethnic Mexicans from the benefits of full social citizenship. Lastly, this study will examine how ethnic Mexicans have created a place for themselves in Orange County through their engagement with baseball culture.
