Research Interests: Akané’s research interrogates Black visual cultures, histories of photography, and global settler colonialisms. Their dissertation project traces visual epistemologies of anti-blackness by excavating compelled photographs in the Black archive and the way in which diasporic artists confront legacies of violent spectatorship.Before coming to UCI, akané worked as a museum educator, researcher, and curriculum writer in New York City. She received her MA in Interdisciplinary Studies from New York University’s Experimental Humanities (XE) and a BA in Environmental Studies from Fordham University Lincoln Center.
