Event Details

Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japanese Americans living on the Pacific Coast were uprooted and forcibly moved to inland relocation camps for the duration of the war. Among them were art photographers whose works, created during the 1920s and 1930s, were exhibited and published internationally to considerable acclaim before being lost or destroyed in the hysteria of the relocation. Over the years examples of these beautiful and adventurous expressions have been located, a few at a time. This talk will introduce these accomplished artists, explore the character of their photographs, and examine their place in photographic art history.
