Chandigarh, Idealized and Realized: 20th Century Architecture in India
Presentation by Tracy Buck, UCLA Department of Art History

This presentation examines 20th century modernist architecture in India by focusing on Chandigarh, a planned city conceptualized at the intersecting moments of Independence, Partition, industrial globalization, nation-building, and mid-century modernism. Prime Minister Nehru’s utopian vision and Le Corbusier’s design for the new capital city of Punjab continue to provoke discussion about the limits and goals of architecture in India today.

Tracy Buck is a PhD student in the Department of Art History at UCLA. Her dissertation research focuses on the planned city of Chandigarh, and particularly on Nek Chand’s artistic project, the Rock Garden, within that city.
