Please join us to celebrate the publication of The Arden Research Handbook of Shakespeare and Social Justice, edited by David Ruiter (UCSD). The volume addresses the relevance and responsibility of art to the real world -- to the significant teaching and learning, performance and practice, theory and economies that not only expand the discussion of literature and theatre, but also open the gates of engagement between the life of the mind, lived experience, and the pursuit of social justice. The collection draws from noted scholars, writers and practitioners from around the globe to assert the power of Shakespeare to question, disrupt, reimagine and reform both the ties that bind and the barriers that divide us.

Pedagogy Workshop: Setting the Table for AntiRacist Shakespeare
led by Chris Anthony, DePaul University; Youth and Education Program Consultant, Los Angeles Shakespeare Company

If Shakespeare is a feast, how do we invite a global community to the party? Whether conscious or unconscious, the systems of thought embedded in the text and our pedagogical practices shape how students see themselves and the world.  How can Shakespeare support a quest for equity, justice, and the realization of a Beloved Community?

Chris Anthony is a director, teacher, actor, and producer working at the intersection of art and community empowerment. She has used inter-cultural dialogue in spaces ranging from elementary schools to adult correctional facilities. As Associate Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, she oversaw the development of the company’s Youth & Education programs including Will Power to Youth, which won the prestigious Coming Up Taller Award. Professional directing credits include the original Off the Rails for Native Voices at the Autry, Lunch Lady Courage at Cornerstone Theater, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet, and Othello at the St. Louis Black Rep, and Romeo & Juliet at the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles.
