Lecture by Dr. Patricia White, Professor of Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College.
Examining the regional realism of independent women filmmakers like Chloé Zhao and Kelly
Reichardt, as well as their discursive positioning as auteurs, Dr. White shows how their films
mark the limits of American empire and Hollywood hegemony in global cinematic circuits
through the formal inscription of a particularized, gendered point of view.
Patricia White is the author of Women’s Cinema/World Cinema: Projecting Contemporary
Feminisms, and Uninvited: Classical Hollywood Cinema and Lesbian Representability, and coauthor
with Timothy Corrigan of the introductory film textbook, The Film Experience. She is
on the board of directors of Women Make Movies and is a member of the editorial collective
of the feminist journal of media and culture, Camera Obscura. Her most recent book is on
Hitchcock’s Rebecca (BFI Classics).
