Rhythms of the Brazilian Northeast, a performance by Joao Martins and JoVia Armstrong.

 Latin American Studies     Feb 27 2020 | 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Music & Media building 218

This lecture-demonstration will explore the origins, characteristics, and social contexts of traditional musical styles of the Brazilian Northeast - including capoeira, maracatu, ijexá, baião, and samba, among others. The result of a confluence of Iberian, West African, and Native Brazilian musics, these styles reveal a deep musical complexity that is intrinsically connected to the history and identity of the region.

With an introduction by Dr. Alex Borucki and performance by Joao Martins and JoVia Armstrong.
