Click on the program links below for more details about the freshman orientation programs:

  • Student Parent Orientation Program (SPOP) will be offered on-campus several times in July and August. SPOP is a comprehensive orientation program designed for all new domestic freshmen and new international freshmen who attended high school in the U.S. SPOP attendees will receive academic advising and sign up for Fall quarter classes at orientation.
  • International Student Orientation (ISO) will be held on-campus from September 19 - 21. ISO has been specifically designed for new international freshmen who did not attend high school in the U.S. Since ISO is held in September, International students who sign up to attend it will receive their academic advising over the internet and enroll in classes earlier in the summer. If you make a reservation for ISO, information about web advising will be sent to your UCI email account in July.

International Undergraduate Preparation Program (IUPP) participants – please contact your program advisor for information about your orientation requirements.

Exceptions

If you are unable to attend an on-campus orientation session, you may submit an exception request to New Student Orientations using the Orientation Exceptions Request Form, accessible during the registration process.  You will be required to submit documentation showing why you are not able to attend any of the in-person orientation dates.  If your exception is approved, you will be prompted to complete the Humanities Web Advising process prior to enrolling in classes (the webinar will be avilable in mid-July).  You will also be required to attend a Mandatory Follow-up Advising Session on September 26, 2017.

Placement Testing

You will be able to sign up for placement testing as part of the Orientation registration process, or you may sign up separately on the Testing Center website. You MUST take any required placement exams BEFORE attending Summer Orientation. The types of tests being offered are as follows:

  • Writing: To enroll in any writing course at UCI, you must have placement results from the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam or you must submit documentation showing you have satisfied the Entry Level Writing requirement.
  • Math and Science: Math and Physics are not specific requirements for Humanities majors but can be taken to meet portions of the General Education requirement. You only need to take those exams if you are interested in taking calculus or physics.
  • Language other than English: If you plan to enroll in any of the following language courses this Fall, you must take a placement test this summer: Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Spanish or Vietnamese. The placement exams for French and German are optional, but recommended.

Not sure which test to take? Most Humanities majors take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam and, if necessary, a language placement exam.
