Kem Nunn is an American novelist and television writer from California who also surfs a great deal. He received his MFA from Programs in Writing at UC Irvine in 1984. His novel have been desribed as "surf-noir" for their dark themes, their polictical overtones and their costal settings. He is the author of the novels, Tapping the Source, Dogs of Winter, Pomona Queen, Unassigned Terirory, Tijuana Straits and most recently, Chance.

David Milch and Nunn co-created the HBO series John from Cininnati, set in Imperial Beach, California, and Nunn and Milch also collaborated on the dramatic western television series Deadwood.
