Application Process

Admission is for the Fall quarter only, and the application deadline is January 10th for the following fall. All supporting documents must be submitted in hardcopy form to the department by the January 10th deadline (no exceptions).

The next deadline for applications is January 10, 2018 for Fall 2018.

Application Requirements

These are required components of an application; please see below and follow the links for specific information. You must supply a valid e-mail address that you will maintain at least 8 months after you apply. If you are admitted, you will be notified via this e-mail address. The following items are required to complete your application:

  1. Application for Admission

    You must complete and submit your online application for graduate admissions.  Paper applications are no longer accepted at UCI.

    Five business days after your completed application has been submitted, you may check the Application Progress Review system to see if your official test scores (GRE and TOEFL) have been received from ETS. You should also monitor progress on submission of your letters of recommendation via the Application Progress Review system.

  2. Application Fee
    • $105 for U.S. Citizens and lawful U.S. Permanent Residents
    • $125 for all other applicants

      Your application cannot be reviewed until UCI has received your non-refundable application fee. The non-refundable application fee may be made by MasterCard or Visa credit card OR by check or money order.   3. GRE
    There is no minimum required GRE score. The results of this test represent only one of many factors reviewed in the admission decision. Please choose institution code 4859 to send your official GRE test scores.
     
  4. TOEFL or IELTS
    Official TOEFL scores are required for an applicant who is not a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident and whose primary language is not English. The requirement may be waived for admissions purposes only when you have attended an upper learning institution for at least 2 years and have received a degree in the U.S. (Institution Code: 4859). This waiver is for admissions purposes only. International students who are appointed as Teaching Assistants are still required to receive a passing score on an appropriate English language proficiency exam prior to serving as a Teaching Assistant.  More information regarding the English proficiency requirement for international students can be found here.
     
  5. Letters of Recommendation
    Three letters of recommendation are required to be submitted on your behalf. Letters may be submitted online or on paper via regular mail; online submissions are strongly preferred. Please refer to the UCI Graduate Division: Letters of Recommendation website for submission methods.

  6. Transcripts
    Submit one official transcript for every post-secondary program attended. Official transcripts must be in sealed envelopes as issued by the school(s) you have attended. If the transcript is not in English, an official English version from the University must be submitted with it.
     
  7. Writing Sample
    You are required to submit one writing sample on a topic of your choice or a previously written paper, in English.  It should be not more than 30 pages in length, typed and double-spaced.
Please note that once submitted, your application materials will not, under any circumstances, be returned to you or forwarded to another entity on your behalf.
