CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections

China’s rapid emergence as a global player and potential partner on many U.S. policy priorities has ensured that the Sino-American relationship will have a direct impact on the lives of nearly everyone in both countries. To help Americans better understand the complex U.S.-China relationship, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations is conducting the tenth annual CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections at more than 80 locations nationwide.

4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Live webcast discussion with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, moderated by National Committee President Stephen Orlins.

5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. "New Silk Roads and other Great Games" with James A. Millward. The Chinese government has launched what promises to be a massive diplomatic and investment initiative with continental and maritime dimensions encompassing much of Asia and reaching to Europe.  Is this "One Belt One Road" strategy a "revival" of the "ancient silk road" or something new?  Are its goals commercial or strategic or both?  Are there domestic Chinese implications as well as international ones?  Is the goal simply to help get Chinese goods to European markets more efficiently, or does the program represent a new Chinese orientation to foreign aid and development?   Prof. Millward will explore questions these questions, on his extensive work on the history of both China and Central Asia and reflection on the idea of "the silk road."
