About the UCI School of Humanities Whenever you tell a story, see a film, ponder an ethical question or explore a cultural tradition, you are encountering the humanities. A humanities education provides a deep knowledge of history, language, literature, philosophy and the visual arts, as well as a profound understanding of the contributions of influential thinkers, writers and artists from many cultures.
Programs in the School of Humanities are among the highest ranked in the country, contributing to UC Irvine’s reputation as one of the very best public universities. The School’s faculty is renowned for its range of scholarly interests and commitment to innovative and interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate education, including fields such as critical theory, world history and visual studies. Humanities faculty and students work together in a laboratory of ideas in which critique transforms established disciplines and leads to new fields of inquiry.
Within the School of Humanities, students discover opportunities for personal and intellectual growth most often associated with highly selective liberal arts colleges, while also enjoying the assets of a comprehensive research university. Superb faculty scholarship shapes undergraduate as well as graduate courses. Critical self-reflection, an essential part of that scholarship, can be transformational for both students and the topics they study.
The School of Humanities prepares students to be global citizens equipped with the tools of analysis, expression and cultural understanding required for leadership in today’s world. Our students not only master a body of knowledge, but they also develop a set of portable skills needed for a lifetimethe ability to think critically, read deeply and communicate effectively. |
