10:00 a.m. | Jennifer Terry, professor of gender and sexuality studies, undergraduate director

"I have always been drawn to opportunities to learn skills that in one way or another counter oppression, advance liberation, and change the world for the better. That's why gender & sexuality studies and intersectional feminist and queer theories and methodologies have mattered so much to me. I went to a community college right after high school and eventually transferred to UC Santa Cruz where I got my B.A. and my Ph.D. Between those two degrees, I was living in San Francisco in the early 1980s, involved in AIDS activism and working odd jobs -- from scooping ice cream to driving a produce truck and transcribing oral histories of elders active in socialist organizations who survived the purges of Joseph McCarthy. After working as an archivist at the Emma Goldman Papers Project at UC Berkeley for a few years, I went back to get my Ph.D. in the History of Consciousness and the rest, as they say, is history.”

11:00 a.m. | Catherine Sameh, associate professor of gender and sexuality studies, graduate director

"I have been a feminist for as long as I can remember! After graduating from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR with a minor in gender studies, I worked in a Feminist Women's Health Center and started a feminist bookstore. I received my Ph.D. in women's and gender studies at Rutgers University. I love working and talking with students!"

12:00 p.m. | Lauren Hyun Yi Kang, professor of gender and sexuality studies

“After immigrating from Korea, I grew up in San Diego, Long Beach and Downey. I went to UC Berkeley for my B.A. and to UC Santa Cruz for my Ph.D. I am the first-generation in my family to go to college. I love teaching gender & sexuality studies at UCI because of the many curious and passionate students who take our classes and decide to major in GSS!”

1:00 p.m. | Jeanne Scheper, associate professor of gender and sexuality studies, department chair

"I was born in Baltimore, MD in an era of racial segregation, uprisings against anti-Black violence, and the anti-war and women’s movements of the late '60s and '70s. I went to college in the era of HIV/AIDS and militant queer activism. I’m interested in how gender and sexuality are understood in different historical periods and political contexts, and how we remember those histories and tell our stories. As chair of the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies, I look forward to hearing your questions and welcoming you to the GSS major."
