Dr. Mu-Chou Poo discusses the use of witchcraft in court politics and palace intrigues in early and medieval China, from the Han to the Tang Dynasties. He pays particular attention to the social, religious, and medical environment that encouraged a belief in witchcraft and the distinct roles of “wugu” (using poisonous vermin with the help of a wu-shaman) and “zhuzu” (casting curses).
