The APIAVote Internship Program strives to encourage and cultivate young Asian Pacific Islander student leaders to explore a career in the public sector or the political area. This summer internship program will also provide hands on experience and training on how to organize and implement voter activities to increase the participation of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the electoral process. Deadline: April 23, 2007 NAPA / APIAVote INTERNSHIP PROGAM The National Asian Pacific American Panhellenic Association (NAPA) began as the APIA Greek Alliance in the Summer of 2004 as a partnership in a "Get out the Vote" campaign with APIAVote. Seeing the successful collaboration's potential impact on the APIA community and on its campuses, the group began to take on more projects and eventually evolved into what NAPA is today. Through projects such as APIA Vote, Tsunami Relief, Katrina Relief and other partnerships, they have collaborated to address issues facing the Asian American fraternity and sorority community, as well as the Asian American community as a whole. NAPA is committed to a long term, ongoing relationship with APIAVote, and as a result have fundraised for the NAPA/APIAVote Internship Program. I'm Geoffrey Tsudama of the Little Tokyo Service Center. I wanted to take this opportunity to talk to you about a wonderful opportunity for your students, the Nikkei Community Internship (NCI). NCI is an eight-week summer program where interns are placed at different Japanese American community-based organizations in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas. Interns in this program will also participate in various field trips and community/cultural events. Besides the gained training and experience in community work, each intern will receive a $2,000 educational scholarship. The requirements to participate in this program are: - A strong interest in the Japanese American community or non-profit community work. - Age 18 by the start of the program. The deadline is soon approaching, March 16th, but I'm hoping you would disseminate this information to any of your students that might take interest in this sort of community internship. Interns will gain exposure to a wide array of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities, their needs, and how to best provide services. Interns may become involved in proposal development, needs assessment, program planning, community participation research, evaluation, project coordination, event planning, or leadership training. Interns will gain practical experience in the areas of economic and community development, health care, social services, education, legislative education, and policy impacts upon the community. Interns will also develop educational materials which are translated into different Asian and Pacific Islander languages, assist with writing the agency newsletter, make community presentations, and assist with technology development. Interns interested in developing a specific project may conduct a needs assessment for the API community. This project would include asset mapping of the community, compiling demographic data, and conducting focus groups and surveys regarding needs. The needs assessments are then used to develop community programs and promote leadership. Community Health Programs: Child Injury Prevention, Pacific Islander cancer, Diabetes control and Mental health Policy and Advocacy: Voter Education and Voter’s Rights Youth Programs: Afterschool Program, Unity Games, Summer youth programs, Project Cultural Artistic Leadership (C.A.L.) 24 and other various Youth Programs Coursework related to public health, social sciences, education and/or public policy helpful. Interns should also have enthusiasm, energy, and a genuine desire to learn about the Asian and Pacific Islander community. Being bilingual in the various Asian and/or Pacific Islander languages [i.e. Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), Hmong, Khmer, Marshallese, Samoan, Tongan etc.] are helpful. The Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA) need interns/volunteers to serve as positive role models and provide academic assistance to high school aged students in our SOAR Afterschool Program. This program provides youth with a safe environment to receive academic mentoring and support, as well as character education, leadership development, and cultural enrichment. There are several volunteer opportunities available: Academic Mentor – Help students reach their academic goals. Assist with homework in one-on-one and small group settings (min. commitment of 3 hours/week). Internships - Interested in working with youth, Asian and Pacific Islander issues, or the non-profit field? Earn college credits while you gain valuable skills and experience. Agency Description: Thai Health And Information Services (THAIS), Inc. is a non-profit community based organization incorporated in 1995 and the only community based Thai-centered health and education organization in the local area. ELIGIBILITY American citizens of Japanese ancestry who are entering, returning or continuing undergraduate or graduate students at any University of California campus. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is recommended, but all others are encouraged to apply (especially those with a strong community service record). Recipients who have previously received a CJAAA Scholarship of $1,000 or more are NO longer eligible. AWARD CRITERIA Awards of varying amounts will be awarded on the basis of scholarship, contribution to the community, personal attributes and financial need (in that order). One-half of the funds will be disbursed after verification of enrollment for the first academic semester/quarter. OCAPICA is in search of Volunteers for Voter Project. Need community service hours? Need credits for class? Want to make sure the Asian and Pacific Islander voice is heard? Help serve your community and volunteer for OCAPICA’s Voter Project. The Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA)’s "Project Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote" is focused upon GOTV (get out the vote) and education efforts with Asian and Pacific Islander low propensity voters in the Southern California counties of Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino. The project is funded by The James Irvine Foundation and includes, phone banking, mailers, education workshops, and working closely with the ethnic media. In collaboration with our partners, OCAPICA is targeting low-propensity APIA voters in a non-partisan voter mobilization campaign. We want to ensure that APIAs are no longer ignored in the political process. Earn class credit, community service hours, serve your community and get free food in the process. Volunteer positions: Phone Banker Phone Bankers will be calling voters to remind them to vote. Volunteers will be given talking points and a script. Volunteer a minimum of 5 hours between Oct. 18th to Nov. 6th. Evening and weekend shifts are available. Phone Banking to take place in OCAPICA Garden Grove office. Exit Poller Exit Pollers will be surveying voters on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7th. All exit pollers must attend a mandatory training. Morning shift (8AM-12PM) and/or Evening shifts (4PM-8PM) available. Exit polling to take place throughout various poll locations in Orange County. Bilingual volunteers are a plus .
