"The Word in the Woods: Documentary Filmmaking and History" - lecture and film screening

Historian and filmmaker Jeffrey Gould will give a lecture and screen his co-directed documentary film, La Palabra en el Bosque (The Word in the Woods) about liberation theology and peasant organizing in El Salvador.   The event is co-sponsored by Latin American Studies and the Department of History and is open to the public. 

Prof. Gould is a leading expert on Central America and author of several pathbreaking histories of race and labor in Nicaragua and El Salvador.  His books include:  To Lead as Equals: Rural Protest and Political Consciousness in Chinandega, Nicaragua, 1912-1979; To Die in this Way:  Nicaraguan Indians and the Myth of Mestizaje, 1880-1965; and To Rise in Darkness: Revolution, Repression, and Memory in El Salvador, 1920-1932, all published by Duke University Press.  La Palabra en el Bosque is his first film.  He is currently finishing a second documentary on El Salvador about violence and labor organizing in the fishing industry.
