Revealed in the early 2000s, the archaeological culture of the Jiroft / Halil Rud valley (Kerman) is one of the most important discoveries in the last decades in Near Eastern archaeology. Named Marhashi in contemporary 3rd-millennium Mesopotamian texts, with well-identified kings, generals, and gods, Jiroft is also well-known for a gorgeous production of chlorite vessels exported from Syria to Indus, decorated with a fascinating iconography. Active since 2006 in the valley, François Desset (Univ. Tehran/CNRS Archeorient) will give here an overview of the main results and place them in the contexts of the 3rd millennium Age of exchange, at a time when the Persian Gulf was a commercial highway connecting the Indus civilization to Mesopotamia.

This event is presented by UCI Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture.
