In this talk we will discuss the complex political history of the Gaza conflict. Beginning with the partition of the Palestine Mandate in 1947 and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the history of the Gaza Strip as it shifted between Egyptian, Israeli, and Palestinian Authority rule will be outlined, tracing the rise of the Hamas movement and linking these developments to current events. The talk clarifies some of the confusion and myths surrounding this complicated arena, situating recent events in light of this historical political context.

Alon Burstein is an Israel Institute Teaching Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of California Irvine. His research focuses primarily on violent social mobilization and political unrest, analyzing the dynamics surrounding the use of terrorism and political violence. His articles, focusing on international terrorism, Hamas and the PLO, and social mobilization in Israel, have been published in the journals Terrorism and Political Violence, Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, Israel Studies, and International Interactions.

This event is presented by UCI Center for Jewish Studies and is co-sponsored by UCI Department of Political Science with generous support from Marc Friedman.
