THE CREATION OF ISRAELI CULTURE: ORIGINS AND DILEMMAS

This talk will examine the development of Hebrew culture during the British Mandate of Palestine from 1920-1947. By uncovering the ways in which a national culture was consciously created, it will elucidate a variety of dilemmas and tensions in the process and address their impact on contemporary Israeli society.  The presentation will also incorporate rare archival film footage.

Nina S. Spiegel is the Rabbi Joshua Stampfer Assistant Professor of Israel Studies at Portland State University. Her first book, Embodying Hebrew Culture: Aesthetics, Athletics, and Dance in the Jewish Community of Mandate Palestine (Wayne State University Press, 2013) has been selected as a finalist for both the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and a National Jewish Book Award.  Spiegel’s articles have appeared in publications such as Jewish Cultural Studies, Jewish Folklore and Ethnology Review, and Rethinking History: The Journal of Theory and Practice. She has also served on the board of directors of the Congress on Research in Dance.  She holds a PhD in history from Stanford University and a BA from Brown University.
