Call for Proposals: NEH Summer Stipends

UCI Internal Review for Nominations | Proposals Due Sunday August 23, 2020

Awards provide $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing in Summer 2021.

The National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends program aims to stimulate new research in the humanities and its publication by supporting the work of individual scholars doing research or writing. The NEH is particularly interested in applications from junior faculty. Although this is a very competitive program, the relatively short application and the focused time period make it a good way for junior faculty to lay the foundation for future grant applications.

Faculty members teaching full-time at colleges and universities must be nominated by their institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals who have been living in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least the three years prior to the application deadline. Individuals who have held a major fellowship or research grant or its equivalent (one that provides a stipend of at least $15,000) within the last three academic years prior to the deadline are ineligible.

UCI Internal Nomination Process

Interested UCI faculty must apply for a UCI nomination in order to be eligible to apply to the NEH. The internal nomination process is being coordinated by the Humanities Center and is open to all UCI faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences as defined by the NEH. UCI is allowed to nominate two faculty applicants.

Preliminary applications for internal review are due by 11:00 pm on Sunday, August 23. The following should be submitted as a single PDF via a Google Forms application at https://forms.gle/gJ4JVWUmEawPH7nV7

o Brief proposal (up to three pages), including how you plan to use the funding (the grant may be used for direct research expenses or summer “salary”). You do not have to provide a detailed budget.

o Short CV (no more than two pages)

Consult the NEH Summer Stipend guidelines in preparing the internal application. Questions about our internal campus review process and the NEH application process may be directed to Amanda Swain at ajswain@uci.edu.

An ad hoc committee representing Schools with faculty applicants will be convened in late August to review the preliminary proposals.  The selected applicants will be notified of nomination by August 31 and will receive assistance from the Humanities Center in preparing a final proposal to the NEH.

Final proposals are due to the NEH by September 23, 2020 via grants.gov.  Faculty will submit their proposals to grants.gov as an individual applicant (applications will not be submitted through Sponsored Projects).  Amanda is available to assist with the grants.gov application portal.
