Discovering History in Chinese Cities:
A Book Slam Celebrating Four 2020/2021 Urban Studies Publications

In the past decades, there has been a growing interest in Chinese urbanism. Scholars in various disciplines have delved into urban changes in modern China from a wide range of perspectives. This public online event, jointly sponsored by the History Department and the Center for Asian Studies at UCI, will explore different ways in which scholars investigate Chinaʼs urban past with a focus on a quartet of books published in 2020/2021: Elizabeth LaCoutureʼs Dwelling in the World, Toby Lincolnʼs An Urban History of China, Peter Hamiltonʼs Made in Hong Kong, and Xuefei Renʼs Governing the Urban in China and India. These authors will make short presentations about their books, and two discussants, Kristin Stapleton and Dan Knorr, will provide comments on how these works are engaged with urban studies in the Chinese context. A general discussion among the panelists will follow, and then there will be a question and answer session involving the audience.
