Since its inception in 1991, Cappella Artemisia, an internationally recognized female ensemble based in Bologna, Italy, has received both critical and popular praise for the rarity and beauty of its repertory and the high quality of its performances. The group, under the direction of Candace Smith (a California native who has lived abroad since 1975), performs works originally intended for and performed by the many talented women whose families consigned them to the convent—sometimes against their will—during the Baroque period.
The program to be presented on the UCI campus features motets dedicated to great women of the Church, including Cristina of Bologna, Catherine of Alexandria, and Ursula with her 11,000 virgins, composed by and for 17th century Italian nuns whose disembodied, angelic voices resounded from within cloisters all over the Italian peninsula.
