Course Description
This course is designed primarily to introduce students to the spread of Korean popular culture and the explosion of literature based on this cultural phenomenon in the context of globalization. In this course, students will examine the paradoxical co-existence of nationalism and transnationalism in contemporary border-crossing cultural engagements. Through this examination, students will rethink the notion of popular culture in the context of increasing transnational collaborative relations, globally and locally. Students will be equipped to critically and analytically examine the establishment of popular culture’s spectatorship within and beyond its border. Students will also learn different perspectives on the influences that the screening culture produces on and off the screen. Primary texts include literature, film, and television. All readings are in English.
