Life By Design: Everyday Digital Culture
EXHIBITION
Call For Proposals

Beall Center for Art and Technology
University of California, Irvine
April 1 - 20, 2003

Life By Design: Everyday Digital Culture proposes an interdisciplinary exploration of the everyday impacts of digital culture. Starting with the premise that digital culture is no longer new, but is rather a given, the exhibition seeks to open a space for a 'second wave' of analysis, criticism and practice. In emphasizing the word 'culture', we assume a central role for the interaction between people and technology, rather than placing a spotlight solely on technology itself. Themes include, but are not limited to ubiquity, performance, history, translation and imagination. In addition to the exhibition, symposium events will include screenings, demos, papers, panels and keynote presenters. A website provides more information and links to a web log discussion of the issues addressed by Life By design: Everyday Digital Culture. See below for more info.

Eligibility
Student, faculty, and professional practitioners, artists, innovators are all eligible. Submissions of proposals for screenings and demos are strongly encouraged, as are a wide variety of submissions from graduate students and practitioners in design, with a special emphasis on those in game, interface, media and transportation design, the arts, especially including performance and time based media, architecture, communication, and engineering. Presenters are encouraged to interpret the themes as widely as possible, and may be given the opportunity to discuss their work during the panel discussions and other more 'textual' parts of the conference, if that is so desired. Interest in presenting a screening, demo or talk should be indicated in the submission.

Support
Support for pieces is limited to installation assistance, and technical support.
