Life By Design: Everyday Digital Culture proposes an interdisciplinary exploration of the everyday impacts of digital culture. Starting with the premise that digital culture is no longer new, but is rather a given, the exhibition seeks to open a space for a 'second wave' of analysis, criticism and practice. In emphasizing the word 'culture', we assume a central role for the interaction between people and technology, rather than placing a spotlight solely on technology itself. Themes include, but are not limited to ubiquity, performance, history, translation and imagination. In addition to the exhibition, symposium events will include screenings, demos, papers, panels and keynote presenters. Eligibility
Student, faculty, and professional practitioners, artists, innovators are all eligible. Submissions of proposals for screenings and demos are strongly encouraged, as are a wide variety of submissions from graduate students and practitioners in design, with a special emphasis on those in game, interface, media and transportation design, the arts, especially including performance and time based media, architecture, communication, and engineering. Presenters are encouraged to interpret the themes as widely as possible, and may be given the opportunity to discuss their work during the panel discussions and other more 'textual' parts of the conference, if that is so desired. Interest in presenting a screening, demo or talk should be indicated in the submission.

Support
Support for pieces is limited to installation assistance, and technical support.

Available Facilities
The Beall Center is designed to showcase creative research. Access to Claire Trevor School of the Arts facilities may potentially be scheduled as part of the project (see "Facility" at the Beall Center website. The Beall Center will also be happy to assist in negotiations for the use of other facilities on the campus.

Conditions of Support
Technical support for individual projects should be requested as part of the proposal. The Beall Center Website is available for display and/or promotion of research projects.

Proposals
Proposals should address award criteria and should include:
1) Cover Sheet.
2) Projects description.
3) List of collaborators, assistants and consultants.
4) Artist statement.
5) Preliminary visual materials (sketches or diagrams) indicating installation concepts and workflow of proposed project. High resolution jpg is required, and video is appreciated.

Award Notification
Proposals will be reviewed by the LBD Research Review Committee, which consists of the curator, university faculty, graduate students, and the Beall Center Director). Applicants will be notified of awards February, 2003. Projects will be exhibited in the Beall, April 1-20, 2003.

Award Criteria
Criteria used to select proposals include the following:
1) Intellectual and artistic merit in the proposed project
2) Feasibility of the project under sponsorship of the Beall Center
3) Degree of technological innovation
4) Suitability to the themes and goals of the Life By Design: Everyday Digital Culture symposium, as outlined on the conference webpage.
