This talk is about the methods of literary criticism and the epistemology of close reading. It asks, is reading a method, and what kind of truth claims do readings make?

Jonathan Kramnick is Maynard Mack Professor of English at Yale University. His latest book, just out from the University of Chicago Press, is Paper Minds: Literature and the Ecology of Consciousness.  He is also the author of Making the English Canon: Print Capitalism and the Cultural Past, 1700-1770 (1998) and Actions and Objects from Hobbes to Richardson (2010).
