Event Details

Join the UCI History Department, UCI Illuminations, the Forum for the Academy and the Public, and the Literary Journalism Program for a panel discussion on information, the media, and state control.

How prophetic was George Orwell's most famous novel?  If he came back to life now, what might surprise him most and least about the way propaganda and surveillance systems work in different countries?  These are the kinds of questions that this wide ranging panel will address, moving across the world and engaging with different genres of writing.  The participants will be Adam Brookes (a longtime BBC correspondent turned spy novelist); Mara Hvistendahl (a contributing correspondent for Science); and David Kaye (UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protections of the Right of Freedom of Expression).  Jeffrey Wasserstrom (UCI History and the Forum for the Academy and the Public) will moderate.
